Card counting is a very important element of blackjack play, but it won't produce a profit all by itself. Blackjack players give card counting too much credit and they have even created some card counting myths, which apparently will make players lose more often.
1st Myth: A simple strategy is less successful
The complexity of the strategy depends on the system. A simple strategy is not necessarily less profitable than a complicated one. In fact a simple system can sometimes bring more money than the complicated one.
The reality: The profitability of the system is not related with its complexity. The system's logic is the most important feature when it comes to profitability.
2nd Myth: Card counting predicts the sequence of the cards
Card counting does not give the player the possibility to predict the sequence of the cards. The sequence of the remaining cards is impossible to predict, so the player can't exactly predict what card will be dealt next.
The Reality: Card counting is a probability theory and is effective in the long term. It does not predict the next cards, therefore in the short-term it has many variables.
3rd Myth: You can win with little money
Most blackjack players feel invincible once they have a blackjack strategy and master a card counting method; because of this they believe they can make a substantial profit with little money.
The fact that they have an edge toward the casino gives them too much confidence. The truth is that even the most experienced players lose, it's a part of the game; they can't win every time.
The Reality: The 0.5% - 1.5% (percentage of each bet you expect on average to win) can’t get you a constant winning edge. Losing runs might occur and you need to be prepared for them.
The Reality of Card Counting:
Card counting is about probability, not predictability. This means that you can be successful in the long term, but in the short-term the success is not very constant. This information can prepare you for the losing streaks that most likely you will experience. Remember to use a system that you are comfortable using, not a complicated one.
