Lately there have been some rumors about the possibility that the online casinos will be allowed to operate on American soil. Until now, the anti online casino lobby in the US has succeeded in keeping online gambling operations out of the US.
Though with the pressure building up, because of the rapidly expanding business it may only be a matter of time before the US changes its policy. Up to now the online casino industry was kept out of the US and was forced to begin operations in other countries that have not banned them. At present, there are about are three states that are moving toward legalizing online casino.
The main reason for the fact that online casinos can’t operate in the US is due to the federal Wire Act of 1961, which bans use of telephones to place sports bets. U.S. lawmakers have been approaching for a decade to update the law which may not actually apply to online casinos. The truth is that the online casino industry generates about $10 billion a year for the Internet gambling industry.
The law directly, does not specifically ban casino games and it only targets bet taking over a phone line. It does not specifically refer to casino games. North Dakota state Rep. Jim Kasper, R-Fargo recently declared that: “There no desire from anyone to see some tax increases. The online casino is a legitimate revenue maker”. Kasper introduced legislation that would allow Internet poker sites to operate inside his state. So far it has passed the House.
Kasper is in favor of allowing the online casino sites to operate inside the us, because these could bring much needed cash revenues. Also, the U.K. is very close to permitting its land-based casinos accept online casino bets from American players. There is a new British law will permit 137 land-based casinos in the U.K. to take online wagers from U.S. players. The online casino industry, slowly but surely is starting to gain acceptance and even approval in countries that before had a record of being very anti online casino.
