If you have seen a poker tournament, I'm sure that you are familiar with some of the nicknames given to certain hands: Pocket Rockets, Cowboys, Big Slick, and many more. In this article we will talk about the nicknames given to the pocket pairs.
Everyone can memorize these nicknames whether they are poker experts, or haven't play the game once in their lives. They were made popular thanks to the World Poker Tour or the World Series of Poker, but especially by the broadcasters Vince van Patten and Norman Chad.
The pair of Aces: Pocket Rockets, American Airlines, Bullets, Weapons of Mass Destruction
The pair of Kings: Cowboys, King Kong, Ace Magnets (this depends on the number of Aces you receive in the game)
The pair of Queens: Ladies, Hilton/Gabor Sisters, Siegfried and Roy
The pair of Jacks: Jokers, Fish Hooks
The pair of Tens: Dimes, Binary, Boxcars
The Pair of Nines: Meathooks, Phil Hellmuth (this pair made Phil Hellmuth the winner of his World Series of Poker Main Event), German Virgins (in German "nein" means no), Wayne Gretzky
The pair of Eights: Snowmen, Two Fat Ladies, Double Infinity
The pair of Sevens: Walking Sticks, Hockey Sticks, Mullets (because they are long in the back and short in the front)
The pair of Sixes: Route 66, Mario Lemieux
The Pair of Fives: Speed Limit (it was the speed limit some time ago), Nickels, Presto
The Pair of Fours: Magnum (the gun used by Dirty Harry), Sailboats, Luke Skywalker (May the "Fours" be with you, instead of the “Force”), Darth Vader (the Dark Side of the Fours, once again "Fours" instead of Force)
The Pair of Threes: Crabs, Hooters
The Pair of Twos: Ducks, Swans
These are all the nicknames given to the starting pairs in Texas Hold'em. In the next article I will write about the nicknames given to the unpaired hole cards.
