Holdem CardsThe first step to becoming a pro is to understand the language used around the Texas Hold’Em poker table. If you do not put in a little time to learn the vocabulary you will not understand what is going on. The other players could as well speak Chinese. At best you will look like an amateur, and in the worst case they will take you for all you’re worth. Learn the vocabulary and avoid making a fool of yourself.

The most common words used in Texas Hold’Em:

Middle Pair;

This is when you pair one of your pocket cards to the second highest card on the flop.

Monster;

A monster hand refers to an extremely strong poker hand. Your chances of winning the pot are high.

Nickel-Dime;

A nickel-dime Texas Hold’Em poker game is a small-stakes game.

No-Limit;

No-Limit Texas Hold’Em poker games are perhaps the most popular form of Texas Hold’Em poker. This type of game is even played in the WSOP or World Series of Poker. There are no betting limits, you can wager as much as you wish.

Nut;

This term refers to the winnings you need in order to survive as a poker pro.

Nut Straight;

You may remember this term from the movie “Rounders�? with Matt Damon. Out of all the possible straights, the nut straight is the strongest. It is the highest possible straight in any given hand.

Nuts (or Nut), the;

This means that you are holding the best poker hand that can be had. It does not matter what cards will come up on the turn or river.

Odds;

This refers to your statistical chances of making a particular hand. The odds are 3-to-1 against you if you have a 25% chance of making your hand.

Offsuit;

If you have ever watched Texas Hold’Em poker games on TV then surely you have heard the announcer say this term. The announcer will say something like “9 and Queen offsuit. This means that the player has been dealt cards of different suits.

Remember that these are just a few basic terms. The list is much longer and you must get to know all these terms if you want to become a Texas Hold’Em poker pro. If you do not learn these terms you will come of amateurish and the other player will consider you a mark.
