The basics of playing baccarat
In the old days the only ones that could afford to play baccarat were the rich and very rich. The baccarat tables were not placed alongside all the other table games. They were placed in special, secluded rooms. You needed around $100,000 just to get in.
Mini-baccarat is the same as regular baccarat, just that the stakes are a bit lower. The game is played on a table similar to the blackjack table. Sometimes there is one dealer, other times there are two. There is also a shoe that contains multiple decks of cards.
Baccarat is a very simple game. It should not take you long to understand the rules of the game. In addition to the simplicity of this game, it also offers a very low house edge.
Here is a quick rundown of the game. The player and the banker both get two cards. Depending on their card total, they can draw or stand. The goal is to get as close to 9 as possible without going over.
In Baccarat, cards 2 to 9 are worth face value, 10’s and face cards (J, Q, K) are worth zero, and Aces are worth 1 point. Players calculate their score by taking the sum of all cards modulo 10. Simply, when the total value of cards in a hand equals or exceeds 10, the tens digit is dropped. For example, a hand consisting of 2 and 3 is worth 5 (2 + 3 = 5). A hand consisting of 6 and 7 is worth 3 (6 + 7 = 13 = 3). The first digit is dropped because the total is higher than 10). A hand consisting of 4 and 6 is worth zero.
On the baccarat table there are three distinct betting areas: the player betting area, the bank betting area, and the tie betting area. These betting areas correspond to the three different bets that you can place. You can wager on the player, on the bank, or on a tie. You must place a wager in order for the game to commence. If you bet on the bank and you win, you will have to pay the casino a 5% commission.
When you play high stakes baccarat, you get to hold the cards. When you play mini-baccarat, the dealer will do everything. All you get to do is place your bets and watch.
All winning bank or player bets pay even money. All winning tie bets pay 9-to-1 or 8-to-1. The casino will charge a commission which you can pay whenever you want to. You are advised to pay it when it equals your normal betting unit.
Let’s say that you place $5 bets each time. The commission would be of 25 cents. Simply wait until the commission is $5 and when it reaches this value, pay it.
When playing in a land based casino you can expect to find a hand tracker sheet and a writing instrument at the table.
Looking for trends is a common activity, and many baccarat players do this as part of their strategy.
When playing online you can just pick up a piece of paper and a pen and note down any observations. Sometimes the online casino will track down hands for you, which makes the game even easier to play.
