Blackjack is not the easy game that everyone thinks it is. There is more to the game than simply getting an ace and a face and making twenty one. There is skill and strategy to the game that is only realized after playing for some time.
The basic strategy is to get your hand to twenty one, but you also want to beat the dealer if you do not have a twenty one. The cards that are dealt to you will determine what your hand value is. Any card that is not an ace, a face card or a ten is worth the face value of the card. So if you have a five in your hand, that card is worth five points. An ace can be used two ways, as a one or as an eleven. A five with an ace would make your hand total either sixteen or six when you are dealt these two cards together. All face cards and the tens are worth ten points, and ace and a card with a value of ten is a natural blackjack and automatically wins.
The play begins with the dealer dealing each player two cards face up and the dealer will get one card face down and one card face up. The card that is face up will determine the players’ next move. If you are dealt a natural blackjack, and the dealer does not show an ace face up, you will be paid instantly.
If you are holding less than the twenty one, you will have to make some decisions and this is where the strategy comes in. It is a general rule of thumb that you will never take a card when the dealer is showing a six face up. This is because most casinos will force the dealer to take another card and the odds of the dealer busting out, or making a hand that is worth more than twenty one.
If the dealer is holding a seven through ten and you have a small hand like a fifteen, you may want to take another card to get your hand as close to twenty one as possible. It is likely that you are beat without taking a card.
