Gambling/General : The founder of Betonsorts.com was arrested

Gary Kaplan, the founder of Betonsports.com was arrested on Wednesday in the Dominican Republic. He was charged on June 1, 2006 by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Missouri.

He was accused for violating the Wire Act, racketeering, interstate transportation of gambling paraphernalia, interference with the administration of the IRS and tax evasion, and other charges, in all the number of felonies being 20.

Catherine Hanaway, the U.S attorney thanked the law enforcement agencies worldwide that helped them find the fugitive, because now they are able to bring him back to St. Lois where the trial awaits him.

The Dominican authorities sent Kaplan to Puerto Rico to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, who will send him back to St. Lois, or if Kaplan is considered a flight risk will remain there for a while.

Kaplan is accused for allowing his site to take bets from undercover agents. Norman Steinberg, the co-owner of BetonSports.com was indicted as well, while the former director of BetonSports.com, David Carruthers, was arrested in July 2006.
