After a recently released study by Pew Internet & American Life, computer, video, and online games are a very important part of everyday life for college students. During a survey of 1,162 students on two- and four-year campuses from all over the nation, most of the students replied that the time spent with video games does not damage their schoolwork, neither their relationships with friends.
The study was useful, because it also revealed that, in trying to keep up with current trends in social gaming technology, games have become much more of a social activity than previously thought. 65 percent of college students reported playing games regularly or occasionally.
Probably one of the reasons due to which, gaming is so incorporated into college students lives is that, being part of a group, the college students are very connected from the digital point of view. In addition to this, the generation and the video game industry practically grew up together and thus the occurrence of game playing was not a shock to researchers.
Also, a very high proportion of persons interviewed by the Pew study about 48 percent have admitted that gaming prevents them from studying “some” or “a lot” The Pew study revealed the fact that many students take time between classes to play games, or play games as a very brief distraction from studying.
Even though 32 percent of the student gamers have admitted playing games on cell phones, hand-held devices or laptops during class, the students have reported no consequences of this behavior on their grades. About 66 percent felt that gaming had no influence on their academic performance, according to the report, although nearly half of them (48 percent) agreed that gaming keeps them from studying.
