Unlike many other casino games, video poker games are all based on strategy which means that players can increase their chances of winning by understanding the game and practicing. There are multiple varieties of video poker, so players need to understand them all, but some video poker strategies that do apply to all games starts with the basics - players must understand basic poker hand rankings.
These are the poker hand rankings, beginning from the best to the worst:
1. Royal Flush - A straight from a ten to an ace with all five cards of the same suit. In poker all suits are ranked equally.
2. Straight flush - Any straight with all five cards of the same suit.
3. Four of a Kind - Any four cards of the same rank. If two players share the same Four of a Kind, the bigger fifth card (known as the kicker) decides who wins the pot.
4. Full House - Any three cards of the same rank together with any two cards of the same rank. For example, 3 Aces and 2 Kings which is a bigger hand than 3 Kings and 2 Aces.
5. Flush - Any five cards of the same suit (not consecutive). The highest card of the five determines the rank of the Flush. For example, A-J-10-4-3 of hearts which is an Ace-high flush and the highest possible Flush.
6. Straight - Any five consecutive cards of different suits. Aces can count as either a high or a low card. For example, 5-4-3-2-A in different suites which is a "five-high straight" and the lowest possible straight.
7. Three of a Kind - Any three cards of the same rank. For example, three-of-a-kind Aces with a King and a Queen as side cards - the best possible three of a kind.
8. Two Pair - Any two cards of the same rank together with another two cards of the same rank. For example, the best possible two-pair is 2 Aces and 2 Kings. The highest pair determines the rank of the two-pair.
9. One Pair - Any two cards of the same rank. For example, 2 Aces which is the best possible one-pair hand.
10. High Card - No combination and only highest card in your hand. The best possible high-card hand is an Ace high.
