Corkins wins second WSOP bracelet
By Arthur Levine, Jun 28th 2007Hoyt Corkins won his second WSOP bracelet last Wednesday night at the $2,500 No Limit Hold'em Event. He won his first bracelet 15 years ago, in 1992. He stopped playing in poker tournaments in the 90’s but he reentered the game when poker increased its popularity with the so called “poker boom”.
Since then he has made more than $2.5 million in cash, he has won a World Poker Tour title and now the WSOP. Corkins was the leader since day 1 of the event. At the final table he was the chip leader from the start.
He won the main prize of $515,065 by outlasting 847 players. In 1992 he won $96,000 by outlasting 87 players. Other notable finishers were Steve Billirakis (16), Mimi Tran (17), Eric Lindgren (20) and Vinny Vinh (22).
Event #31 Heads-up Championship
Eight players remained in the $5,000 Heads-up World Championship, and each of these players had to win six matches to get to this point. Three more wins and the bracelet would have been secured.
The quarter-final matches
Alfredo "Toto" Leonidas versus Daniel Schrieber
Jared Davis versus Mark Muchnik
Shannon Shorr versus Vanessa Selbst
Steve Sarrafzadeh versus Keith Black
Leonidas is the only player in the group who won a bracelet. Shorr has a history at head-up tournaments as in the 2006 World Heads-up Championship in Barcelona he placed on the 9th place.
Selbst is the only woman remaining; she finished seventh in the 2006 $2,000 No Limit Hold'em event. She finished in money three times in 2006 but never in a major tournament.
Event #32 Seven Card Stud Final Table
Usually this event draws big names, and this year’s event made no exceptions. Daniel Negreanu will compete in the final table, joined by Jeffrey Lisandro. If Negreanu wins this will be his fourth bracelet. Lisandro doesn’t have a bracelet yet, even this is his seventh WSOP final table.
Event #33 Rebuy Tournaments
Some of the best names in poker will compete in the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event: Jeff Madsen, Humberto Brenes, David Williams, Michael Binger, Erick Lindgren, Ram Vaswani, Eli Elezra, Mike Sexton, Allen Cunningham, David Ulliot and Johnny Chan, all fighting for the $464,867 top prize.
Madsen, Elezra and Williams, want to win their second bracelet, Brenes and Binger are fighting for the Casino City Player of the Year honor, Lindgren and Vaswani want to win their first bracelet. Chan is an exception, because if he wins this will be his 11th bracelet.
