Ontario casino workers are ready to walk off the job
By Arthur Levine, May 8th 2007If a contract isn't settled by 11:59 tonight, Ontario casino workers are ready to walk. A meeting took place on Tuesday at 8:00 am between the Representatives of Ontario Lottery and Gaming, the casino's operator, and the Canadian Auto Workers. The latter represent the casino employees.
A decision was not yet taken, but the meetings will take place until the owners will agree upon it. The worker said that if a decision will not be taken until 11:59, they will quit. If a satisfying decision will be taken, they are willing to continue working at the casino.
CAW certified the casino, OLG Brantford as it's called, one year ago. Up to 800 employees will work there if the contract will be settled. The seniority rights and rotating shifts for part-time employees are the main local issues.
Seniority rights were stripped off from the employees by the OLG. If a senior moves to another department he/she will be moved to the bottom of the seniority list.
