There is no Increase in Gambling Addiction
By George Oates, Mar 28th 2006From Boston, Massachusetts according to the South Bend Tribune: "Is the increasing popularity and media coverage of online gambling creating hordes of addicted players, with no money to cover their bets?"
"The answer to this question is no, according to one Harvard University researcher."
"'There is absolutely no evidence in order to claim such a thing' says Christine Reilly, executive director of the Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders at Harvard Medical School."
"Even if in today’s world, gambling is available to each and every one, through the internet, exposure to it is just not enough to create an addiction," she added.
"...The percentage from the U.S. residents that have serious gambling addiction is around 1 percent of the population," Reilly says. "And another 2 percent are "problem gamblers.""
"...From some research studies, we can see that the gambling problems are very frequently associated with depression and/or substance abuse."
