Tinian is a few miles south of neighboring Saipan Island, 100 miles north of Guam, 1,200 miles south of Japan and 1,500 miles east of Manila.
Tinian is part of the Northern Mariana Islands which became a U. S. Commonwealth in 1986. It is a poor island where wages average about US$1,000 per month. It is most noted as the island where the Enola Gay departed on its way to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In early 1997 there are only 40 hotel rooms on the island.
