CURRENCY CONTROLS: The Hryvnia is not negotiable abroad, it can not be imported or exported.The summer of 1993 saw the onset of hyperinflation in the Ukraine with the Karbovanets going from K 6,000 to K 31,000 per US$1.Thus Ukraine introduc ed the Hryvnia to replace the Karbovant on September 2, 1996.Ukrainians can no longer buy and sell US$'s and other hard currencies.Hard currency exchange transactions are only permitted for government authorized imports and exports.
All foreign currency bank notes or travelers checks must be declared upon entry and the declaration retained and produced whenever you exchange money.Upon departure your remaining Hryvnia can be exchanged for foreign hard currency notes.
