Black Hawk (population 300) is in Clear Creek Canyon, on Highway 119 north of Interstate Highway 1-70, 34 miles / 55 km west of Denver, 32 miles / 52 km southwest of Boulder, and one mile east of Central City. Black Hawk is an old gold mining town. The first gold lode was discovered by John H. Gregory on May 6, 1859, at a site which is now on the boundary between Black Hawk and Central city.
