MISSISSIPPI
MISSISSIPPI DESCRIPTION
|
The Mississippi Gaming law went into effect in April, 1990, and applies to any port city along the Mississippi River and in the Mississippi sound along the Gulf Coast. The dockside riverboats where gaming takes place have to be a minimum of 150 feet long and carry at least 250 passengers. While they do not have to be moving, they have to be navigable. All players must be at least 21 years old.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission regulates license gaming in Mississippi. The state taxes gambling proceeds at a maximum of 8% which is low compared to other states with legalized gambling. The first Mississippi riverboats appeared in 1992. Because of economic conditions and changing competition some Mississippi riverboats have closed as others opened in 1995.
Mississippi has one Indian casino owned by the Choctaw Indians in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
