NEW YORK

NEW YORK DESCRIPTION
Indian casinos remain the only legal approved casino gaming in New York State. On June 28, 1995, The New York State Legislature consisting of the State Senate and State Assembly both passed resolutions starting the process of amending the constitution to allow casino gambling in New York State. However, in 1997 the legislature defeated the constitutional amendment allowing casinos.
In the fall of 1993, New York State negotiated gaming compacts with two Indian tribes. The Oneida Nation opened their casino in July, 1993. The St.
Regis Mohawks originally planned to open their casino in the summer of 1994, but have not yet opened. Under the Indian Gaming Act of 1988 both tribes can operate for profit games of chance not otherwise outlawed by the state of New York. Slot machines are not allowed. Under the compacts The State Racing and Wagering Board and the State Police have unlimited access to the casinos to insure the integrity of gaming operation and to maintain order.
In 1997 the first casino gaming cruise to nowhere operating on a continuing bases was introduced from Sheepshead Landing, Brooklyn, New York. Gaming starts after the yacht reaches International waters.
