Addicted gambler goes to litigation against Casino
By Andrea Klein, Jun 28th 2007An addicted gambler who bet and lost more than $600,000 playing roulette at Star City casino now wants his money back. He claims that he made aware and begged the management to keep him away from playing such high stakes some time ago.
The hopeful plaintiff is a 43 year-old man named Behrouz Foroughi. He volunteered to go on a blacklist of problem gamblers to stop him from hitting the gaming floor.
Greg Laughton SC, Mr Foroughi's lawyer, tried to demonstrate in front of the Federal Court in Sydney, that the casino had failed in its duty of care after his client informed staff of his gambling problem .
Mr Foroughi admitted under cross-examination that he is addicted to gambling and that he spent his winnings on dinner parties and sex with prostitutes.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that when the casino put Mr Foroughi on the exclusion list they also gave him an information pack with the numbers of counseling services for gambling addicts. Moreover, it seems Mr Foroughi had never accessed the services.
A psychiatrist explained that Mr Foroughi's 'pathological gambling' addiction may be attributed to his upbringing in war-torn Iran and to the shocking murder of his brother, who was studying at the university there.
