Critics to Ontario Casino Smoking Rooms

By Daniel Michaels, Jan 20th 2007
CTV has reported about critics addressed to the Ontario government for its decision to give permission for building smoking rooms inside province-owned casinos but not restaurants and bars.

The casino request has been quietly accepted in a moment when the revenues dropped sharply as an effect of the severe new law against smoking.

First known as "The Smoke Free Ontario Act" the law was adopted in June. It restricts bars and restaurants from having smoking rooms for its owners.

Such spaces have been built for smoking gamblers in the provincially owned casinos from Falls and Windsor.

Jim Watson, Health Promotion Minister believes that casinos are allowed to fit up smoking enclosures because their main interest is gambling, not food and alcohol.

On the other hand, the critics see casinos as being part of hospitality industry. Therefore they should not have the permission for smoking rooms which turns to be an advantage.
