Gambler Accuse Bookmaker for his £2m Losses

By Arthur Levine, Mar 19th 2008

The greyhound trainer and gambling addict Graham Calvert, age 28, lost his case against the bookmaker William Hill. After he made telephone bets that shortened his budget with over £2m he summoned the bookmaker company to pay back his losses as they failed in their 'duty of care'.

The judge agreed, saying the company manipulated Mr. Calvert's gambling problem to “gain as much revenue as possible by letting him place bets after asking it to close his account under a self-exclusion scheme”. However, Mr. Calvert of Houghton-le-Spring, near Sunderland has a serious gambling problem which would still probably have led to his financial ruin” said the judge.

So, the final ruling was that William Hill was not liable for the losses. Also, it was ruled that Mr Calvert has to pay £175,000 interim costs to the firm, but the payment is on hold pending an appeal.
