The goal of this program is to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries in hockey as well as promoting prevention of hockey-related spinal cord injuries.

The history of the program goes way back, and it started as a specific campaign of the Canadian Spinal Research Organization in 1999 and was focused on and led by the hockey community. Honest, outrageous, and at times bizarre, Cherry has been called many things during his 24 years with Canadian network CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, but he has never been accused of being at a loss for words.

"I cannot say that I have many hobbies" declares Cherry. "I don't golf. I don't fish. I don't have any other interests in life except for hockey."

The goalie mask was painted by a front-runner in the CBC "Greatest Canadian" contest, Cherry, with the help of his daughter. Cherry’s career ran across playing in the NHL, and after which coaching it.
