Goalie Mask Bought by GoldenPalace.com

By Joni Hawk, Nov 15th 2006
There was a recent auction in the Hockey Hall of Fame on NHL.com, and at that auction, Internet casino GoldenPalace.com won the trophy that was for sale that night, Don Cherry One-of-a-Kind Goalie Mask paying for it $16,010 making it the world's most costly goalie mask.

The incomes generated by the selling of this mask, will be aimed at the program "Shoot for a Cure," a hockey-focused fund-raising campaign for spinal cord research. The goal of this program is to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries in hockey as well as promoting prevention of hockey-related spinal cord injuries.

The history of the program goes way back, and it started as a specific campaign of the Canadian Spinal Research Organization in 1999 and was focused on and led by the hockey community. Honest, outrageous, and at times bizarre, Cherry has been called many things during his 24 years with Canadian network CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, but he has never been accused of being at a loss for words.

"I cannot say that I have many hobbies" declares Cherry. "I don't golf. I don't fish. I don't have any other interests in life except for hockey."

The goalie mask was painted by a front-runner in the CBC "Greatest Canadian" contest, Cherry, with the help of his daughter. Cherry’s career ran across playing in the NHL, and after which coaching it. Cherry has now parlayed his broadcast success into a line of popular videos, a chain of restaurants, a syndicated radio show and lucrative endorsements. At a time when hockey is at a standstill due to a lockout, GoldenPalace.com is bringing some good news and some good will to the sport. "We are more than happy to contribute to the Shoot for a Cure campaign," said GoldenPalace.com CEO Richard Rowe. "We hope that this will be a step forward for this sport in addition to helping raise awareness for Spinal Cord Research."

The online casino made headlines again, not so long ago, when they purchased the ball that David Beckham sent sailing over the goal in the Euro 2004 tournament, together with a one-of-a-kind Cabbage Patch Kids similar to the talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres, President George W. Bush, and Senator John Kerry on eBay. All these items were used since their acquisition, to raise over $200,000 for various charities. This marks GoldenPalace.com as the first online casino to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame, where the mask will remain on display until.
