GoldenPalace.com Buys Another Strange Item: a Bathtub
By Joni Hawk, Apr 3rd 2006Online casino GoldenPalace.com now has a new piece of history to add to their imposing collection of eccentric historical items by acquiring from eBay, the bathtub that James Earl Ray was standing in when he shot Martin Luther King in 1968. The bathtub’s price was of about $7,600.
Memphis judge D'Army Bailey, the one who sold the tub, is among one of the founders of the National Civil Rights Museum that is located at the site of King's death. He paid for the tub in 1983 when the former rooming house was being renovated.
Bailey’s first attempt to sell the tub on eBay was in 2004. Even though the bid price went up to $152,000, eBay removed it due to the fact that it might be considered offensive, particularly by King's family. The auction site then decided that it met their criteria for historical artifacts and allowed to be put back up for auction.
Bailey sold it because the casino assured him that the tub will be treated "with sensitivity for its historical significance." A part of the procured price for the bathtub will go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Inc., whose aim is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth.
"We are happy to have bought this piece of American history and help a worthy cause by doing so," declared GoldenPalace.com CEO Richard Rowe. "MartinLuther King continues to touch people's lives, and we will take care of this item with the respect and admiration it deserves, in his memory and legacy."
Establishing the standard in marketing originality, GoldenPalace.com has created some of the most thrilling and shocking advertising campaigns in the past few years. Items like the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Britney Spears' Pregnancy Test, and William Shatner's Kidney Stone have brought extensive worldwide media attention for the casino. GoldenPalace.com also used their items and marketing reach to raise awareness and more than $1,000,000 for various charities worldwide.
