Navajo Nation Joins Indian Gaming Association
By Max Defoe, Sep 6th 2007
The Navajo Nation is scrambling to join the Indian gaming industry, two decades after gaming legalization on Indian reserves.
During a gaming forum held at San Juan Community College, Robert Winter, the chief executive officer of Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise said: “Time and financial strategy are extremely important now as the Nation moves forward with construction of its first gaming casino near Church Rock on Interstate 40.”
He also added: “gaming will catch the attention of patrons from outside the reservation and create in a profit margin of at least 10 percent, this of course if it’s done right, success being as we all know measured in number of patrons and profit. Borrowing from a $100 million line of credit extended by JPMorgan Chase, the Navajo Nation can construct the first of its six casinos that are in plan, but the casino's financial triumph is vital if the Nation wants to maintain or increase its borrowing power".
