New gambling laws in the UK

By Daniel Michaels, Feb 22nd 2007
Analyzing the actual gambling context, one of the Parliament Members in the UK has decided to involve the government in the regulation process of gambling market by advising specific payment solutions and enforcing them too. The UK politicians stated that the rapid development of online gambling industry and the enormous number of UK gamblers definitely requires new regulations. Now, more than ever, they are concerned for the security of the players who might not realize the industry's tricks.

Mike Weir, a British MP representing the Scottish National Party in the Angus constituency of Scotland, has demanded that a limit on individual online casino bets of GBP 1,000 per week be placed on online players and has also recommended that online casino gamblers be restricted to the use of only one credit card on an online casino site.

Weir, as other parliamentarians, sustains that this type of involvement by the government can be justified on the basis of some recent results provided by an elaborated research. The analysis revealed the huge popularity of online casino gambling and rapid grow of online gambling action.

The government officials are pretty worried about the fact that some online casino gamblers may not have adequate strength of mind or discipline in a national economic environment where credit is pretty easy to obtain.

Consequently, the fear is that excessive debt could be gathered by online casino enthusiasts. The latest study revealed that up to 4 million UK inhabitants now play at online casino sites every month, and the estimation forecasts are that this will increase by 22 % in 2007, do to the amplified focus on the European market and the American online casino gaming financial interdictions.

Until now, the industry has been rejecting the initiatives of government-induced boundaries, arguing that problem gamblers represent a tiny minority that is better recovered by anti-addictive and underage restrictions.

Furthermore, is clear that superior organization and control, plus advanced card technology by the banking institutions can have a more helpful impact on the gambling market.
