Norwich hits jackpot in gambling survey
By Daniel Michaels, May 20th 2005According to a new survey, Norwich is the UK's very own answer to the world's gambling capital.
The report by Yellow Pages shows that Norwich has more listings for amusement parks and arcades than any other town or city in Britain, including Blackpool.
This means Norwich has been twinned with Las Vegas in the poll.
The area also has more nature and wildlife parks than anywhere else — making us the equivalent to the Masai Mara safari reserve in Kenya.
The survey was carried out to give families an idea of where to escape to over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Other secret hotspots people might not have realised existed are the breweries Mecca in Exeter, the factory outlet capital in Chesterfield and the wine-tasting hub of Britain — in Tunbridge Wells.
Leicester is the place to go for go-karting but for other motor sports, Northampton snatches pole position.
And budding water sports stars should head for Plymouth, which is the UK's answer to Hawaii and the Great Barrier reef in Australia.
Mini-Ibiza's bursting with nightclubs can be discovered in Preston and Plymouth.
Richard Duggleby, head of external relations at Yell said: "Who needs to go abroad when we've got so much to chose from at home? What surprises us about this research was not only the sheer choice of leisure and pleasure options in our major cities, but also the diversity of activities available in other parts of the country."
