Online gambling. Controversial opportunities

By Elizabeth Scott, Jan 23rd 2007
Some states have specific laws against online gambling of any kind. Also, owning an online gaming operation without proper licensing would be illegal, and no states are currently granting online gaming licenses.

In the United States a major concern is online money laundering. The anonymous nature of the Internet and the use of encryption make it especially difficult to trace online money laundering transactions. In April 2004 Google and Yahoo!, the internet's two largest search engines, announced that they were removing online gambling advertising from their sites.

In spite of all this, millions of fans are expected to sign up for online gaming accounts for the first time over the next month. Today, the games will draw the heaviest betting of any sporting events ever. In this situation, who wins? Certainly, not the companies in the United States, where online gambling is against the law...

Starting from the huge potential of online gaming, more and more investors are focused on gaming and Wall Street is keen on funding its expansion, especially here.

The name Bill Lerner may not mean much for local developers but is familiar to gaming investors who read the financial press. Asked why did he moved his Wall Street office to Las Vegas, he replayed: “I was traveling back and forth from New York to Vegas every four to six weeks. From a competitive perspective, none of our competitors had done it. It's the capital of gaming.

From the perspective of being on the ground, having access to management, having access to channel checks, living and breathing it, it made sense. I made the decision with research management at Deutsche Bank. Both sides were extremely excited about doing it.”

He and Somer Hollingsworth, president of the Nevada Development Authority, said that if an office of Wall Street is leaving the Mecca of finance for Las Vegas then is more than obvious that online gaming is a great investment in the 21 century.

Another year has passed, and what a year it was for poker players and fans! At the Harrah's Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, in the expansive Amazon ballroom, players were seeking instant fame and long-lasting wealth merged from all over the world to participate in the 46 events, 2006. There the floor will be jammed with security and media. As a poker spectator, be prepared for rude treatment and, please, do your best to stay out of trouble.

Regardless of all the obstacles that we briefly mentioned, the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe will keep trying to build a casino in Barstow. According to Patricia Morris, assistant to the Barstow City Manager, any tribe or Indian band sitting a casino in Barstow would need a Municipal Services Agreement (MSA) with the city, a state compact approved by the governor and both houses of the legislature and an agreement with the Federal Department of the Interior to add the land the casino was on to a tribal land trust.

Their locations don't necessarily make great casino sites, but they believe that local tribes should have preference. The tribal chairman Charles F. Wood said that the overwhelming vote against Measure H was not anti-Indian Tribe or anti-gambling but simply a vote to tell the city to remain neutral in the casino controversy. In deed...

Starting from here, the American Gaming Association President, Frank Fahrenkopf, may want to watch his back. In Washington, a Sioux Indian tribe with a casino in Minneapolis has put down $1 million toward buying a building next to the Chilean Embassy on Massachusetts Avenue, also known as Embassy Row. Until now, the gaming association has only represented commercial casino operators. Things are changing.
