Online Gambling decision revoked in France
By Joni Hawk, Jul 24th 2007It all started with France banning a Maltese company that offered online betting on horse races in France. After the European Commission intervened France reconsidered it decision and revoked the ban for the Maltese Company Zeturf.
The European Union sustained that state monopolies justify only when are involved companies suspected of ‘criminal or fraudulent activities’ by 'channeling them through controllable avenues'. The Commission also declared that under the European Union rules that they see no justification for such limits to competition, even those ‘stemming from limits on gaming as a special or private right’
After this decision the case against the internet betting company is sent back to Paris for appeals on a court for new rehearing and this may take around a year.
