Packer must resolve the Alberta dispute

By Daniel Michaels, May 7th 2007
The Alberta Federation of Labor has sent a letter to James D. Packer, the Executive Chairman of PBL Publishing & Broadcasting Limited, in which they have requested Packer solve the seven month old dispute at the Palace Casino in Edmonton.

PBL Publishing & Broadcasting Limited is the famous Australian publishing, broadcasting and gambling giant. Gil McGowan, the AFL President, said that they have asked Mr. Packer to solve the situation in a professional and objective way.

The Palace Casino together with other Gateway Casinos Income Fund assets have been purchased by Mr. Packer’s company, and now maybe he, being the new owner, will be able t take care of the problem.

McGowan notified Packer about the severe financial losses caused by the strike at the Palace Casino: a $3.5 million drop in revenue in the 4th quarter, which means a drop of 126.9%.

McGowan also advised Packer to get to an agreement with the striking members of United Food and Commercial Workers, and if they manage to agree, the financial losses will be recuped in time. McGowan is convinced that such a successful businessman as Packer will not let this problem remain unsolved.
