Poker World Series could make this Canadian rich
By Arthur Levine, May 8th 2007Steve Csermak, 38-year-old from Grimsby, Ont., will compete in the World Series of Poker, in the Texas Hold’em event. He has the possibility of winning $7.5-million, after he paid only $9 to enter.
He won the online tournament at bowmans.com and by winning the tournament he also won the buy-in for the WSOP plus $2,500 in expenses. He paid only $9; which is a very good deal, considering the fact that a regular buy-in is of $10,000.
Csermak said that he is very excited, because he has a shot at the grand prize after he paid only $9. The tournament starts Thursday but Csermak will begin playing only Saturday, because he doesn't play in the first round. More than 6,600 players are expected to compete in this tournament.
The main prize is estimated to be around $7.5-million, and the top 600 players will win more than $10,000. Csermak said that he is amazed by the fabulous sums of money involved in this game.
He also said that he started to play online poker less than a year ago, but that he has been playing poker his entire life. He is a project manager at a hi-tech company, but said that he only plays in tournament because he can only lose his entry fee.
That way he can't get carried away to spend more money. Even if does get carried away, the money he loses would be made in the tournament, not from his own pocket. The combination of psychology, card sense and memory is what attracts him to Hold’em poker.
He won in the beginning of May the first level of the Bowmans' qualifying series, and on May 29th he managed to win the final. He went to the tournament instead of celebrating his wife’s birthday with the rest of the family.
His wife understood him though, and when he came home and told her the great news she was thrilled. In the first three days 2,000 will compete against each other at more than 200 tables.
By the end of the day 600 players will remain in the game. By the end of the 9th day, from the 1,800 players, only 9 will play in the final table. Csermak can be eliminated in half an hour or he can play around 11 hours per day in those 9 days.
He is practicing the game because he has never played it in a land based casino. His main priority is hiding his tells, and maybe he will wear sunglasses not to reveal too much. One thing is for sure: he will wear a shirt with a Bowmans logo on it.
