The Domino Effect of Gambling
By Andrea Klein, Apr 25th 2007Every day, a lot of people can be seen in the gaming hallways of Macau's newest casino, the Grand Lisboa. Most of them are dressed in jeans and trainers. That's not unusual. But if you take a look at the luxury brand shopping bags and the sheer number of them, you can see their rising spending power.
Chinese consumers and the increase in gaming zones have made Macau one of the top rising gambling economies globally, surpassing Las Vegas last year as the world's biggest earner of gambling revenue. Also, the tourism sector has nearly doubled since 2003 due to the Beijing who has allowed free travel to the former Portuguese colony, an hour boat ride from Hong Kong. More than 10 million people came to the colony last year, half of total visitors.
Anyway, such rapid and healthy growth brings new challenges like significant labor shortage or lagging infrastructure.
