The game of Baccarat
By Arthur Levine, May 22nd 2007Some time ago, millionaires were the only ones who played baccarat. The game was played in special rooms and you couldn't play the game unless you had at least $100,000.
Then mini-baccarat game was introduced. The rules of this game are the same as of that of Baccarat, but this game is played on a blackjack style table with a dealer and a shoe, which contains multiple decks of cards.
The game is easy to play and it has one of the lowest house edges, which makes it one of the best casino games. In the game, both the dealer and the player receive two cards. Each hand may take an additional card and who gets closest to 9 wins.
The face cards have two possible values: ten and zero, depending on the situation. Ten equals zero, so when someone has 10 the count restarts: for example a 9 and a 5 equals 4 (9+5=14; 14-10=4)
The table has three betting areas: player wager spot, bank wager spot, and tie wager spot. Before each round you must place a bet on one of this spots, and each of them pays different. Usually the bank or the player wins.
The bank has an edge because the player acts first at the table, and for each bet you have won by betting on the bank you must pay a 5% vig. In the mini-baccarat game the dealer does all the action, you just observe how he/she deals the card. If you want to get more involved in the game then you should play the original baccarat game.
You will receive even money when you win with the player or with the bank. The tie pays much more, 9 to 1, because a win on a tie happens very rare. It is best to pay the vig from the bank wins when you win on a tie. If you place $5 bets, and a bank win costs 25 cents, it is best to let the vig rise to $5 and then pay all the sum once.
If you play in a casino usually you will find a sheet of paper and a hand writing instrument at the table, so you can track your hands. This is part of a strategy, which we will discuss in another article. If you play the game online, and the casino doesn't track the hands for you, you better do it yourself. This is Baccarat, a really simple and magnificent game.
