UK wishes a new code of practice for Offshore Gambling Centers
By Joni Hawk, Jun 20th 2006UK Financial Times from London reports that “England hopes to convince the offshore centers (Gibraltar, the Cayman Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Antigua and Costa Rica) that are reaping the lion's share of the explosion in online gambling to sign up to a new code of practice on the sites.”
"Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary, declared for the Financial Times she would host a meeting in October to try to get international agreement on a new code of practice.
"The UK government plans to invite the International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organisation, along with ministers from all the main offshore gambling jurisdictions.
"However, Britain could face an uphill task in convincing offshore centers to put at risk a profitable source of income by imposing much tighter regulations…"
