Wolfe and Hellmuth lead in the WPT Championship
By Arthur Levine, May 8th 2007The difference between the European poker tournaments and the American ones are clearly visible. Even so, the champions of the European Poker Tour (Roland de Wolfe) and of the World Series of Poker (Phil Hellmuth) are currently the chip leaders of the World Poker Tour championship.
It is the second day of the championship and many players have been eliminated. Wolfe is the leader with 535,000 chips, but right on his back is Phil Hellmuth. Wolfe is a silent but dangerous player while Hellmuth likes to make outrageous bets. He has already lost $6,000 to Jamie Gold, because of those bets.
Their experience gives them high chances of winning the $3.9 million first prize, even if at poker, a lead is never safe. The WPT title has yet never been won by either one of them.
Anna Wroblewski, the amateur who made $330,000 from $300 in a Bellagio Five-Star Poker event is currently on the 12th place having more than $330,000 chips. After the first day she was the chip leader, which makes her a serious contender for the first prize.
Paul Wasicka, the runner-up of the 2006 WSOP Main Event, has 430,000 chips and is on the 5th position. He is also a serious threat to the title, and he hopes he will once again win millions, after he had won more than $6 million at the WSOP.
Some players that are currently in the game are: Patrik Antonius, Sammy Farha, Carlos Mortensen, Freddy Deeb, Chip Reese, Hoyt Corkins, Robert Mizrachi, J.C. Tran, Cliff Josephy, Scott Fischman, Erik Friberg, and Gold.
Some famous players that have been eliminated: Joe Bartholdi, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu, Allen Cunningham, Joe Hachem, and Erick Lindgren.
214 players remaining are still in the game and the play will start today at noon PST. In the final table, which will begin Friday the top three spots will pay more than $1 million.
