Blackjack : How to be successful at the blackjack table

By Daniel Michaels

Level: Apr 27th 2007
Blackjack is different from other casino games because the player can use a basic strategy to reduce the house's edge to make a profit in the long run. We will present you with one of the most simple blackjack basic strategies in what follows:

The blackjack basic strategy helps you make the best decisions in every situation of the game, by using mathematical statistics to analyze these situations.

One such strategy can be learnt in an hour, and if used with patience it can increase your profit. The wins will not come every time, but in the long run you will be at an advantage.

You must know that not all casinos have the same blackjack rules: in some land-based or online casinos the game is played with multiple card decks, whereas in others is played with only one deck.

Some casinos oblige the dealer to hit on a soft 17; others oblige him/her to stay on a soft 17. The doubling after splitting rule is once again allowed only in some casinos.

The basic strategy we are about to present you is applied when the game is played with a single deck and the dealer must hit on soft 17. If the casino you play in has different blackjack rules, you must adjust this strategy according to those rules.

The Blackjack Terms:
  • The Hard Hand: the first two cards which don't contain an Ace
  • The Soft hand: the first two cards which contain an Ace
  • Stand: when the player doesn't want another card from the dealer
  • Hit: when a player wants another card from the dealer
  • Double: when the player doubles the bet after the first two cards have been dealt, but he must hit only one extra card
  • Split: when the player splits his two cards into two hands and plays them individually

The Blackjack Basic Strategy:
  • When the first two cards combined have a value of 8 points or less: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have a value of 9 points and the value of the dealer's hand is between 3 and 6: double, if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have a value of 10 points and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 9: double, if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have a value of 11 points and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 10: double, if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have a value of 13, 14, 15, or 16 points and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 6: stand, if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have a value of 17: stand
  • When your first two cards combined have an Ace2 or Ace 3 combination and the value of the dealer's hand is either 5 or 6: double, if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have an Ace4 or Ace 5 combination and the value of the dealer's hand is 4, 5 or 6: double; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have an Ace6 combination and the value of the dealer's hand is 3, 4, 5, or 6: double; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have an Ace7 combination and the value of the dealer's hand is 2, 7, or 8: stand; if the value of his hand is 3, 4, 5 or 6: double; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined have an Ace8 or Ace9 combination: stand
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 2s or 3s and the value of the dealer’s hand is between 2 and 7: split; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair 4s and the value of the dealer's hand is either 4 or 5: split; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 5s and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 9: double; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 6s and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 6: split; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 7s and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 7: split; if something else: hit
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 8s: split
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 9s and the value of the dealer's hand is between 2 and 7, and either 8 or 9: split; if something else: stand
  • When your first two cards combined form a pair of 10s: stand
